Most rig breakdowns start as small problems that were not noticed. A short routine saves time and money.
Daily checks
- Look for hydraulic oil leaks around hoses, fittings and cylinders.
- Check hydraulic oil, engine oil and coolant levels.
- Inspect hoses and clamps for cracks, rubbing or bulges.
- Grease the points the rig maker marks for greasing.
- Test the controls and gauges before you start drilling.
Weekly checks
- Clean or replace air filters in dusty conditions.
- Check bolts and mast fixings for tightness.
- Check tyres or tracks and the carrier brakes.
Periodic service
- Change hydraulic oil and filters at the interval the rig maker advises.
- Have worn hydraulic seals, hoses and valves replaced before they fail.
- Get a mechanic who knows rigs to inspect the structure and welds.
When something goes wrong
Stop drilling, note the symptom, and call a mechanic. Running a rig with a leaking hydraulic line or a failing pump usually makes the repair bigger.
