DTH Drilling Rig overview
A DTH (down-the-hole) drilling rig puts a pneumatic hammer at the bottom of the drill string. Compressed air drives the hammer, which strikes the rock directly while the rig rotates the string, so energy is not lost along the length of the rods. That is why DTH is the usual method for drilling hard rock at depth.
The rig itself is a mast, a rotary head, a feed system, a hydraulic power pack and an operator control panel, all carried on a truck, crawler or tractor. A compressor supplies the air and flushes the cuttings out of the hole.
