The rig does the drilling, but the carrier decides where the rig can work, how fast it moves and how much it costs to run. Choosing the right carrier is one of the biggest decisions when you buy a DTH drilling rig.
Truck mounted rigs
A truck mounted rig carries the mast, drilling head and hydraulics on a truck chassis. It drives itself between sites on the road, so setting up is quick.
- Best for borewell and water well contractors whose jobs are far apart
- Can carry rods, bits and tools on the same vehicle
- Needs reasonable access: it is not suited to steep or soft ground
Crawler mounted rigs
A crawler rig sits on tracks. It can climb, turn and work on rough, steep or soft ground where a truck cannot go, and the tracks spread the weight.
- Best for quarries, mines, construction sites and borewells on difficult terrain
- Compact footprint for tight spots
- Moves slowly on its own tracks, so distant sites usually need a trailer
Tractor mounted rigs
A tractor mounted rig fits the drilling head and mast to a tractor. Many owners already know how to run and repair a tractor.
- Lower investment than a truck or crawler setup
- Suited to farm borewells, village water work and smaller contractors
- Best for short moves on farm and village roads
How to decide
- Where will you drill most: roads and plains, or rough ground?
- How far do you travel between jobs?
- What is your budget for the machine and for running it?
- Can you maintain the carrier easily where you work?
